Walmart Partners with Consumers Energy to Power Michigan Locations with Clean Energy

Consumers Energy and Walmart Inc. announced an agreement for Consumers Energy to supply clean energy to 44 Walmart locations within Michigan. This milestone is a significant achievement for Consumers Energy's Renewable Energy Program, which now boasts commitments from over 30 major employers.

Under the agreement, Walmart will match 90% of the energy used at 44 Michigan locations with renewable energy from future projects developed by Consumers Energy. This collaboration is part of a broader effort where over 30 businesses have committed to nearly 600 megawatts of emission-free renewable energy. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, this is enough to power approximately 66,000 homes annually and equates to removing the greenhouse gas emissions produced by over 120,000 cars each year.

A Commitment to Clean Energy

Lauren Snyder, Vice President of Customer Experience at Consumers Energy, highlighted the importance of this development.

“Developing new renewable energy resources for our customers reflects Consumers Energy’s commitment to Michigan’s clean energy future and the collaboration it takes to bring them to fruition,” she said. “By diversifying the energy portfolio, we are making a meaningful impact in adding critical new clean energy capacity to the grid while fostering economic growth and job creation in renewable energy.”

Walmart’s Energy Transformation

Walmart is accelerating its strategy to power all its operations with renewable energy. Stephen Chriss, Senior Director for Utility Partnerships at Walmart, emphasized the importance of this initiative.

“Walmart’s energy transformation roadmap is designed to prioritize high-impact, high-quality clean energy opportunities that help add new clean energy capacity to the grid and secure reliable and emissions-free power for our operations,” he said. “We look forward to collaborating with Consumers Energy to add new clean energy capacity to Michigan’s power grid.”

Supporting Michigan’s Renewable Energy Goals

Other Michigan businesses recently joining the Renewable Energy Program include Calmic LLC, CIE Newcor MTG, and Mayfair Plastics Inc. Consumers Energy’s Renewable Energy Program offers a cost-effective and flexible solution for businesses aiming to use solar and wind energy to meet sustainability goals. This program not only helps green Michigan’s grid but also supports local jobs in building and operating renewable energy projects.

By integrating these comprehensive sustainability measures, Walmart and Consumers Energy are setting a new standard for corporate responsibility and environmental stewardship, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future for Michigan.
